About this site

Euro 2008

To Qualify to the European Championships you have to finish in the top two of one of the 7 qualifying groups. The other qualifiers are the host nations Switzerland and Austria. Six of the Seven groups will consist of seven groups while the other one will consist of eight.

The Qualifying begins in September 2006 and will finish in November 2007 after a campaign which will either be 12 or 14 games. There will be seven top seeds with Greece the reigning Champions definitely seeded as the winner of the last tournament is automatically a top seed. The other seeds will be determined by performance at the qualifying for the past World Cup and European Championships. To decide rankings the total number of points taken in the qualifying competitions from the qualifying of the World Cup and European Championships are taken then divided by the number of matches played. If a country has qualified automatically for a tournament then its matches from the last two major qualifying events are taken.

The Draw for the European Championship qualifying stages always takes place after a World Cup Qualifying campaign. For the group composition part if two or more nations have the same coefficient then the following criteria will be applied:
a) coefficient from the matches played in its most recent qualifying competition,
b) average goal difference,
c) average number of goals scored,
d) average number of away goals scored,
e) drawing of lots.
Groups will be played in a league system with the with each team playing each other at home and away. Like most leagues three points for the win, 1 point for the draw and no points for the defeat.
If teams finish on the same points then there will be seven ways to determine who goes through.
1. Highest number of points won in the group matches played by the two teams.
2. A better goal difference from the group matches played among the two teams in question.
3. The most amount of goals scored in the group matches played among the two teams in question.
4. The most amount of away goals scored between the two teams in question in the group matches.
5. If the two or more teams still have an equal ranking then if that does not work then 6 and 7 will apply.
6. Results of all group matches: 1 superior goal difference 2 Higher number of goals scored 3 Higher number of goals scored away fron home 4 Fair play conduct.
7. Drawing of lots.
After all atat is decided we will have sixteen teams qualified for the European Championships proper. UEFA will then split the 16 teams that qualify into four groups of four. The seede teams for the event will be the two hosts, the reigning champions if they qualify and the other one with the best coefficient on the basis of the 2006 World Cup qualifying groups. In the group matches each team plays each other once in a league system with three points for a win, 1 point for a draw and no points for a win. The last two group matches always kick off at the same time The top two will the qualify for the quarter finals where this stage is played over one match. The winners of the quarter finals the n play in the semi?s then the winner of these two matches will play in the final to determine the winner. From the quarter finals stage and onwards the match will be decided by extra time then if still equal then penalty kicks.

The Finals

The 2008 UEFA European Football Championship will take place in Austria and Switzerland, from 7 June to 29 June 2008. It is the second successful joint bid in the competition's history. The only previous tournament held in two countries was the 2000 European Football Championship, hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. Austria and Switzerland will automatically qualify as hosts. The remaining 14 teams will be determined in a qualifying tournament that started in August 2006.

The Official Euro 2008 LogoThe two countries jointly bid to host the games, and faced major competition from Greece/Turkey, Scotland/Ireland, Russia, Hungary and Croatia/Bosnia-Herzegovina. Austria had already bid with another country before, which was Hungary for Euro 2004. They had eventually lost to Portugal, who managed a successful championship.

Austria/Switzerland, Greece/Turkey, a Nordic four-nation bid (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden) and Hungary were recommended before the final vote. Greece and Turkey were rejected and let Hungary and Austria/Switzerland battle for the win. But the final vote went to Austria and Switzerland, who had been the favourites in many people's eyes all along.
